Lancing Pillars

Lancing Pillars mark the entrance to the seaside home of Charles Austin, a comic variety actor.

Charles Austin was a member of the Grand Order of Water Rats and was awarded 'King Rat' six times. He purchased the land to build his seaside home in the late 1920's and soon after sold off plots of land for private holiday and retirement homes. Charles Austin's house has since been demolished, with the pillars being the only reminder of his property.

The pillars are a local curiosity for residents and visitors to discover. To find out more visit the Lancing Pillars webpage on the Folly Towers website (www.follytowers.com/lancing.html).

For sometime, the Council has been working with the local residents to try and find a way to restore the pillars as they have fallen into disrepair. Neither West Sussex County Council or the Adur District Council have any legal responsibility for them, but both feel it would be a shame to see this piece of local history fall further into disrepair. Like local residents we feel it would be a shame to see this piece of local history fall further into disrepair.

The Parish, West Sussex County Council and the District are making a contribution towards the scheme as a goodwill gesture. We do however; need the support and generosity of local residents to see this scheme to completion. We are asking local residents and interested parties to contribute towards the repair works to this local landmark. If you would like to contribute towards the work (we are suggesting £10 or more if you feel able), you can do so by sending a cheque made payable to "Adur District Council" to : Street Scene, Adur District Council, Commerce Way, Lancing, BN15 8TA.
