Credit crunch - How the council can help you ...


Housing crisis?

If you are facing a housing crisis of your own, do you know where to go for help?

Did you know that Adur District Council has its own free housing advice service? This service is not just for council tenants, or homeless people and it’s never too late to seek help!

We can help you :

  • Deal with legal action threatening your home.
  • Deal with legal documents, prepare for court hearings and we can even come to court with you.
  • Negotiate with mortgage lenders, housing associations or private landlords and make payment agreements to enable you to remain in your home.
  • With advice about your rights in relation to your home.
  • With advice about benefit entitlement and help you to claim. Negotiate with creditors, and if necessary, negotiate with trustees in bankruptcy.
  • Whatever stage of difficulty you might be at, whether you’ve just had a letter from your mortgage lender about arrears or you are hours away from eviction - it’s never too late or too early to get help.

Is the economy making life grim for you and your family?

Adur District Council is encouraging local residents and businesses to seek support and take up services and benefits available to them during the credit crunch.

If you are struggling to pay your bills or are concerned about the impact of the credit crunch, we can offer help.

  • Council tax
    If you pay council tax and are on a low income, you may be entitled to council tax benefit. Even if you find you’re not, there may be other ways we can help. If you are struggling with the bills don’t just leave it, come and talk to us.

  • Rent
    If paying for your home is a problem and you are a private, housing association or council tenant, you may be eligible for housing benefit to help towards your rent. What is the council doing to help businesses?

Over 400 eligible small businesses have been encouraged to apply for rate relief. If you have received an application - fill it in you may be surprised. One small business who did apply received over £1,000 back.

Adur District Council is committed to paying invoices as quickly as possible to help suppliers.
