Adur
District Twinning Association
Adur District Twinning Association was established in 1989.
Our aim is to foster good relations with other countries in Europe, to establish friends, and develop cultural, sports and economic links between Adur District and our European counterparts.
Adur District is twinned with Riom, in France, and Żywiec, in Poland.
Twinning
The concept of twinning originated in Europe as early as the turn of the century, and it has expanded most remarkably over the last 50 years.
The basis of twinning is deeply rooted in friendship, with the main aims being to enable different communities to exchange their history, culture and contemporary lifestyle, and thus increase mutual understanding, tolerance and respect.
The UK is a leading protagonist with over 1900 twinnings. In the European ranking it closely follows the examples set by France and Germany. The Uk's major twinning partners are France, Germany, USA, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy and Poland.
By the early 1990s communities started to re-evaluate the content of their twinning arrangements and saw a noticeable trend towards economic and technical aspects of twinning as well as the creation of more multi-lateral relationships. Central and Eastern Europe became a more attractive option and twinning activity between these particular countries has climbed steadily towards today's encouraging situation.
About us
Adur District has been twinned with Riom in the Auvergne region of France since 1994 and signed a twinning agreement with Żywiec in Southern Poland in 2000.
The Twinning Association is a non-political organisation and receives no public money. All our financial resources are derived from members' subscriptions and the various fundraising events we arrange every year.
You don't have to speak French or Polish to join us. Our members' linguistic abilities range from fluent to virtually non-existent.
One of the great things about Twinning is that you can develop good and lasting friendships, even if you do not speak the language. Sign language, together with a glass of local French wine or Polish Żywiec Beer all help to break barriers down.
You don't have to visit France or Poland and you don't even have to act as a host for our friends when they visit us (although we are sure you would enjoy the company). You can participate in as many, or as few activities as you wish. There is no pressure. The main thing is to promote international friendship and enjoy yourself.
Membership is just £7 (pounds sterling) for individual membership or £10 (pounds sterling) for family membership (prices correct as at December 2006).
By becoming a member you will :
