26 new affordable homes for Lancing

Ref : 09/061 : Date : 03-07-2009

Work has now started to build 26 much needed affordable homes in Lancing. The £4 million development is thanks to a partnership between Adur Council, government funding via the Homes and Communities Agency and affordable housing developer Affinity Sutton.

Planning permission was granted in March this year for seven three bedroom houses, five two bedroom houses, 12 two bedroom flats and two wheelchair

accessible bungalows on the site of the former St Giles Day Care Centre, in Elm Grove, Lancing.

It’s now all systems go for the exciting development after Adur councillors agreed to help out financially when funding for the scheme fell short of the amount needed to build the new homes - contributing £195,000 to the cost of the development. The Homes and Communities Agency also contributed nearly £2million to ensure the development went ahead.

These much needed family homes, which are set to be completed by March 2010, will go to people currently on the Adur housing register. The council has 1396 people on the list and is delighted to be contributing towards this scheme.

Cabinet member for regeneration, Jim Funnell, said: “With the current economic climate the way it is we have seen a slow down in new homes being built in the district. So this is such good news to be part of a partnership which will help 26 families have a new home.”

Tracy Evans, Head of Housing in the South, for Affinity Sutton, said: “We are absolutely delighted that both Adur Council and the Homes and Communities Agency were able to support this exciting project which will provide a real mix of much-needed affordable new homes for rent in the community.”
