Don’t lose your right to vote
Ref : 08/071 : Date : 22-08-2008
Adur and Worthing residents can register to vote the easy way by freephone
or online.
Voter registrations forms will be dropping on the door mat from this Friday (22/8/08).
A series of eye catching bus adverts will encourage residents to register to vote before the deadline of 15 October.
For households where electoral roll details remain the same, people can re-register by calling Freephone 0808 1617603 for Adur, and 0808 1617606 for Worthing voters. People can go online to www.register-online.co.uk or return the form by post. Every form has a unique reference number and password and people will need to have these to hand when registering.
Adur and Worthing Councils, who now have one shared election team, have also worked in partnership with Arun, and Chichester on the campaign. The advertisements will appear on Stagecoach buses and are organised by CBS Outdoor Ltd.
New legislation means that if people have not registered the electoral registration officer’s staff have to visit non-responding households to collect the form in person.
Adur and Worthing’s chief executive and returning officer, Ian Lowrie said: “ Our councils want to encourage people to re-register to vote by phone or online if possible where there are no changes. This is more convenient for many people and also helps the councils keep costs down.”
Registering to vote not only gives citizens a voice at election time it can also be important if you are opening a bank account, obtaining a mortgage, loan or other credit as it is a major source of information for financial institutions doing credit checks.
