Olympic Games 2012 - here we come
Ref : 08/068 : Date : 12-08-2008
Celebrate
the end of the Bejing Olympics and the start of the four year run up to the
London Olympics in 2012 with a Big Picnic in West Sussex on 24 August. As
London’s Mayor, Boris Johnson, receives the Olympic flag in Beijing
people up and down the country will be enjoying events in their communities.
Join the Big Picnic at Fishersgate Recreation ground from 3pm - 7pm and enjoy hours of free entertainment, just bring your own picnic. Enjoy music from live bands, an aerial trapeze, youth circus, dancing from the Passon dancers, comedy, beer tent and loads of fun stalls and other food and drink.
A Big Picnic will take place in every district or borough of West Sussex to mark the launch of Celebrate! West Sussex, a four year celebration in the run up to the Olympics, which will engage local communities in developing, creating and experiencing the arts and sports.
The events will be connected by a travelling relay, each picnic handing a symbolic baguette baton over to the next as they take place. Adur Council Chairman, Brian Coomber will receive the baton for Adur at 6pm at Fishersgate. The relay will then move on to Worthing, the last event of the day.
Brian said: “These events are a great fun idea and will build interest in the Olympics Games bringing communities together. 2012 is going to be a very exciting year.”
The relay team will travel with the Chichester Festival Youth Theatre’s Silent Orchestra and incredible Breakdancing Guardsmen in full uniform.
