Council planners offer reassurance to workhouse fans

New development on the Southlands hospital workhouse site will respect
the character and local history of the conservation area say Adur planners.
The site, which was bought by English Partnerships will be developed by Crest Nicholson and was identified in the council’s local plan as suitable for new homes.
People were asked their views earlier this year on a character appraisal and management plan of the area. The plan highlighted in detail all the features that make the buildings, walls and open spaces special.
Council planning officers are talking to the developers and West Sussex County Council’s architect to ensure that the main workhouse buildings, although not listed, are retained, re-used and re-furbished.
The Southlands conservation area was designated in 1993 and is in the north-west corner of Southlands Hospital. The designation provides planning controls to help protect and enhance the character of these areas and all development proposals will need to take account of the conservation area.
