M&S superstore not big enough for shoppers?
Ref : 08/051 : Date : 17-06-2008
Marks & Spencer Superstore at Holmbush want to extend their store to
include more space for sales and customer service. The proposal is to extend
the store eastwards into the car park and add a small first floor extension.
A planning application for the extension has been lodged with Adur Council. The proposal is to extend the existing Marks & Spencer retail store by 2,370sq metres to a gross floor space of 12,565 sq metres. They want to extend the café have a bigger shop floor for food and sales. M & S bosses claim the size of store has become too small to accommodate the high level of trading and customer demand for more ranges of goods.
The M&S car park has space for 778 cars. This would be reduced by 80 spaces to make way for the extension. The retail giants propose to introduce staff parking restrictions and controlled waiting times with a travel plan to compensate for the loss of spaces.
The proposed extension includes plans for a green roof made of indigenous plants and grasses found on the downs. By doing this they claim the building will create a transition between the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the harder surface of the built up areas. Other plans include giving the whole building a new roof of copper green patina finish to reduce visual impact on the surrounding area.
A two day exhibition of the plans was held at the Holmbush store and a one day exhibition at Southwick Library in January 2008. People were invited to view the proposals and record their views.
The plans (application number ADC/0316/08) will shortly be available to view on our GIS system or are currently available to view at the Help Point, Civic Centre, Ham Road, Shoreham by Sea.
Comments should be addressed to the Planning services manager by 11 July 2008 - see how to make comments on a planning application.
