Council encourages people to be prepared for flooding
Ref : 08/050 : Date : 17-06-2008
Adur Council, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and the Environment Agency want businesses and residents to know what to do if they face a devastating flood. With one quarter of the district at risk from flooding the council is encouraging people to be prepared.
A flood awareness roadshow will take place on Friday 27 June from 9am - 4pm at the Shoreham Centre, Pond Road, Shoreham. This free event is open to all Adur residents and businesses, who will be able to take advantage of a special offer on new technology flood bags. These were trialed in Shoreham last year and could be used to stem the tide of water if disaster strikes. When the bags are immersed in water they inflate and act as a barrier to prevent water entering buildings. The bags take up little space and can be stored flat in readiness.
The council has bought some to protect its own property and deal with flooding emergencies. Other new technology will be demonstrated such as 'smart' airbricks that close automatically as flood water rises. Also at the event giving advice will be the Environment Agency with their bus, West Sussex Fire and Rescue and emergency planners.
The event will help businesses plan ahead and learn from the experts how to protect their livelihood. The work the council is doing to raise flood awareness is being recognised nationally by local authority risk managers (ALARM) and has been short listed for an award. Adur Cabinet Member for Health Safety and Wellbeing, David Simmons, said: “People can pop in anytime during the day and get some useful advice which will help them protect their homes and businesses. It’s no good waiting until disaster strikes as we have seen all too often in recent years.”
