Council launch poster competition to help tackle dog poo problem
Ref : 08/049 : Date : 16-06-2008

Adur
Council is inviting young people under 16 to take part in a poster competition
which will show why it is antisocial for dog owners not to clean up their
dog's poo. The winning picture will be used by the council as part of an
education and awareness campaign later this year following the introduction
of dog control orders. The winner will also receive a £50 gift voucher.
Most dog owners are responsible, however, there are some who are not and failing to clean up after a dog will be a top priority. There are several problem areas in the district which are known about and local children have written to the council asking for something to be done. The children on the Riverbank and the children of Manor Hall School have worked with the council to help us raise awareness of this issue.
Consultation on the proposals starts on 30 June until 31 August. There will be a display at the Civic Centre in Shoreham-by-Sea and a questionnaire on-line at www.adur.gov.uk (see : Dog Control Orders webpage), this can also be requested in paper.
Adur Council cabinet member for clean and green environment, Keith Dollemore said: “We hope dog owners will see that what we are trying to do here is raise awareness about health and other risks associated with dogs, especially when people don’t clean up. We have no problem with dogs it’s just a minority of dog owners. There is a problem and we are trying to do something about it and having the public’s support would help us."
“We want to know your views - so take part in the consultation and tell us. We would also like to encourage people to report incidents. They can do this by calling (01273) 263047 or by sending an e-mail about Dog Control Orders to dogcontrolorders@adur.gov.uk or you can report dog fouling incidents using our on-line form”
Dog fouling is one of the areas the council will tackle, others include having certain areas, mainly where children play, dog free. The proposals also contain a list of areas where dogs should be kept on leads, such as roads, grass verges and footpaths. The list of suggested sites which could be dog free or where dogs must be kept on a lead can be seen on the councils website and also at the displays. (See : Dog Control Orders webpage).
Competition entries should be A4 and sent (with contact details and age of artist) to Lesley Hunt, Adur and Worthing Council Services, Commerce Way, Lancing BN15 8TA. Please include your name and contact details on the back of the picture. Closing date for entries is 28 July 2008.
