Adur will switch from committee to cabinet and leader
Ref : 07/126 : Date : 12-12-2007
Adur Council will adopt a cabinet and leader system for making decisions from May 2008.
Councillors have decided, following a period of public consultation, to change from the committee system it currently has. The council originally had five options to choose from, but government legislation reduced this to three.
Only 290 people responded to the consultation, which involved the council’s magazine Adur Outlook, a questionnaire was sent to the council’s viewpoint panel of residents and stakeholders, an online survey and a State of the District Forum. Of the options presented 149 people wanted to keep the current committee system. These views were taken into account but only represented 0.5 per cent of the whole voting population of Adur.
Adopting a cabinet and leader system the council says offers greater accountability, is more effective and will work more efficiently in all the partnerships the council is involved with.
Adur Council Leader, Neil Parkin skaid: “Following a lengthy debate, where most of the councillors spoke, the council itself decided that this was the best way for it to work in the 21st century. The consultation responses were considered but some people seemed not to understand how the existing system works or how the new system would work.”
