Get bowled over by new skatepark in Shoreham

Ref : 07/117 : Date : 04-12-2007
A skatepark that will bowl them over is set to open in Shoreham next spring. Adur Council planners have given the project to build the skatepark at Ham Recreation Ground the go ahead.
This large skatepark will be suitable for skateboarders, BMX riders and in-line skaters. It is made up of two parts; a bowl measuring 24 metres x 20 metres and a ‘street course’ measuring 23metres x 14 metres. The end result will feature modern lighting and landscaping. Over 40 local skateboarders have worked with council officers to get this project off the ground.
Big Lottery funding of £135,000 and money from Viridor will pay for the new skatepark. Work will start in the New Year and is expected to be open by the end of March 2008.
Canadian skatepark specialists Spectrum will be in charge of the build, their first in the UK, and local company Adenstar Limited will do the work.
Parks manager, Clive Bramble said: “The project aims to provide the best possible new facility for the money, which meets the needs of beginners and experienced skaters, in a landscaped, futuristic lit and CCTV safe environment which forms a magnificent gateway to Shoreham.
“The user group has worked hard for the last 12 months to find out what is the best available and negotiate with a world leading Canadian company to design their first English Skate facility in Adur.
“We are all looking forward excitingly to March 2008 and wheeled sports Christmas presents.”
