A new steel plant could provide 280 jobs in Shoreham harbour
Ref : 07/108 : Date : 13-11-2007
A Canterbury steel firm is looking to expand its business with a new steel processing plant in Shoreham harbour providing up to 280 new jobs.
Parker Steel have submitted a planning application to Adur District Council for a large industrial building which would be used for storage and processing of steel products imported by ship.
The 4.8 hectare site is within Shoreham harbour on the southern side of the canal to the east of the power station and waste water works. Access is by Basin Road, South which joins the A259 at Hove. This site is currently used as an open wharf for timber, scrap metal and salt storage.
The proposals would provide 16,553 square metres of floor space in the building and when the facility is working at full capacity 150,000 tonnes of steel would be imported to the site for processing. The plant proposes to be a 24/7 operation, 365 days a year.
Steel would be imported by ship and some of the delivery arrangements carried out by barge or ship. The majority of delivery to customers of the finished steel products would be carried out by lorry and this is expected to reach a total of 48 loads a working day when the site is at full capacity.
A public exhibition of the plans was held in Fishersgate on 6 October and letters to residents and other groups were sent out in September by Parker Steel.
The plans are available for inspection at Adur District Council’s Civic Centre, Ham Road in Shoreham. Comments should be sent to the planning services manager at the Civic Centre by 7 December 2007.
