New homes found for voluntary sector

Ref : 07/107 : Date : 08-11-2007

Several of Adur’s voluntary and community organisations are to be re-housed in the Civic Centre, Shoreham thanks to a £235,000 investment in their future. The money follows a successful bid to the South East Development Agency (SEEDA) by Adur Council through the 5 Towns Network.

Adur Council for Voluntary Services (CVS), which includes Homefront, and 4Sight and the Adur Learning Exchange will move to the Civic Centre. The Halcyon Club and Adur Community Transport have been offered accommodation at the Shoreham Centre. The Tarmount studio trust have found a new home at the Old Customs House at Kingston Beach.

Most of the organisations will move from Tarmount Lane in Shoreham within the next six months.

This council owned site which is occupied by these organisations was recognised as an important development opportunity in the Shoreham Renaissance strategy. The strategy published in 2006 was the result of extensive consultation and debate.

An earlier proposal to move the voluntary sector to Burrscrofte in Pond Road was ditched as the organisations felt the overheads would be too high for them to maintain.

Adur Council Leader, Neil Parkin said: “The council values it’s voluntary and community organisations and wants them to be housed in accommodation which is sustainable in the longer term. And this is why it is prepared to give up valuable space to house them.”

“I’m sure the organisations moving into the Civic Centre will find it to their advantage, when they get used to it. It will also mean that the building will become a real civic centre for people and not just a council building. Change is always difficult for people, but if there’s one thing you can count on in life it’s change.”

Building work to provide the rooms and space required is expected to start early in the New Year with completion by March.
