A new footbridge in Shoreham a step nearer
Ref : 07/048 : Date : 02-05-2007
The Shoreham footbridge has reached the shortlist in the UK’s leading sustainable transport charity, Sustrans, Connect2 bid for lottery millions. The original list of projects has now been whittled down to 79 and the footbridge is one of them.
This means the footbridge will now definitely be in the Connect2 bid, which
is being considered to compete with five other projects around the country
for a £50 million pound jackpot in a national televised vote later
this year.
To win, the Connect2 project must get maximum support. People need to vote for their own project. To do this go to www.sustransconnect2.org.uk and look for the Shoreham harbour crossing.
A delighted Neil Parkin, Leader of Adur Council said: “I hope all the people of Adur get behind this bid and vote.”
Towards the end of last year Adur Council, on behalf of the community, applied to be part of the Connect2 project. The footbridge is owned by West Sussex County Council and was built in the 1920’s. Plans to build a wider bridge to the east of the current one would allow for cycling as well as walking.
