(Adur Council website wins Website Accessibility Award)
Ref : 06/065 : Date : 27-06-2006
Providing
good accessibility proves to be a winner for Adur Council website, www.adur.gov.uk,
who received an award at the national Good Communication Awards 2006 (22/06/2006).
The council won the Website Accessibility Award because of its outstanding progress in using technologies to extend the delivery of information and services to hard to reach groups. This includes people with disabilities or those who have particular access needs.
The Good Communication Awards promotes and encourages the public sectors efforts towards effective communication with residents and staff. Entry is open to local authorities, central government departments, community or voluntary groups and recognises excellence in communications and joined up government.
Adur Council chief executive, Ian Lowrie said : Its always good to have our work recognised and this is a great example of a small authority with limited resources and money competing with the big players and succeeding.
Last year the website underwent a major redesign introducing many new features which improved access.
The new design now includes the ability for people, whose computers have the necessary software, to be able to use the website in whichever way suits them best.
An example of this is the extensive keyboard navigation choices for people who cannot use a mouse or vice versa. Another feature of the new look was introducing Browsealoud software, which enables people to hear the text.
