What are allotments?
Allotments are what you make them, a vegetable garden, a sanctuary or a place to socialise but however you use your allotment it will be a fulfilling pastime or activity :
- allotment keeping is a great hobby
- growing your own is fun and can be good exercise

General
The Parks and Countryside Section of Adur District Council administer 12 allotment sites throughout the area. Although the allotment sites vary in size and nature the majority of individual plots are 5 or 10 rods.
What is a 'rod' or 'hectare (Ha)'?
A rod is an ancient land measurement of approximately 5m in length, a square rod being 25 square meters and a '5 rod allotment' being 125 square meters.
A hectare is a metric unit of area equivalent to 0.01 square kilometres, 10,000 square metres or 2.471 acres.
Availability
Allotments are available for any resident of Adur over the age of 18. There are waiting lists for all of our sites, and you must be an Adur resident to be added to the list. The waiting time for a plot can be between 6 months to two years depending on the site. Sites marked (wl) below indicates that there may be a waiting list on that site. Sites marked (wl*) below indicates that there may be a very long waiting list on that site.
Allotments in Shoreham :
- Middle Road (wl)
A large site of 1.59Ha located to the south of Middle Road. - Ham Field (wl)
A large site of 2.66Ha located to the west of Eastern Avenue. - The Meads (wl*)
A small site of 0.99Ha located to the west of Victoria Road. - The Cemetery (wl*)
A small site of 0.51Ha tucked beside the cemetery off Mill Lane. - Williams Road (wl)
A small site of 0.41Ha tucked between housing off Williams Road. All plots are of ten rods and have a shed.
Allotments in Southwick and Fishersgate :
- Hillview (wl)
A medium site of 0.93Ha tucked behind housing off Underdown Road. - Ridgeway
A small site of 0.25Ha between grazing land and housing. The entrance is via Highdown Close. - Manor Hall Road (wl)
A large site of 1.8Ha between grazing land and housing off Manor Hall Road. - Milton Drive (wl*)
A small site of 0.4Ha tucked between The Crescent and Milton Drive. - The Gardens
A small site of 0.4Ha off The Gardens.
Allotments in Lancing :
- Lancing Manor (wl*)
A large site of 2.71Ha with an active allotment association set within the grounds of Lancing Manor Park. - Irene Avenue (wl*)
The smallest site, 0.12Ha between housing at Pratton Avenue and Irene Avenue
What to do if you want an allotment?
Once you have chosen the site you are interested in you will need to register on a waiting list. You can complete the on-line application for an allotment form (Adur residents only) to start the process. If a plot becomes available we will contact you. Please ensure that you notify us of any changes in you contact details.

Finally when you have chosen a plot you will need to fill in an 'allotment agreement' form. Then as long as you comply with the terms of the agreement the allotment plot is available for your use. Full details of costs are available on application.
Allotment rules and conditions
The tenant of an allotment garden shall comply with the following conditions :
- The tenant shall keep the allotment garden clean and in a good state of cultivation and fertility and in good condition.
- The tenant shall not cause any nuisance or annoyance to the occupier of any other allotment garden, or obstruct any paths set out by the council for the use of the occupiers of the allotment gardens.
- The tenant shall not underlet, assign, or part with the possession of the allotment garden or any part of it, without the written consent of the council.
- The tenant shall not, without the written consent of the council, cut or prune any timber or other trees, or take, sell, or carry away any mineral, gravel, sand or clay.
- The tenant shall keep every hedge that forms part of the allotment garden properly cut and trimmed, keep all ditches properly cleansed, and shall maintain and keep in repair any other fences and any gates on the allotment garden.
- The tenant shall not, without the written consent of the council, erect any shed or other building or structure on the allotment garden.
- The tenant shall not use barbed wire for a fence adjoining any path set out by the council for the use of the occupiers of the allotment gardens.
- The tenant shall, as regards the allotment garden, observe and perform all conditions covenants contained in the lease (if any) under which the council hold the land.
- The tenant shall observe and perform any other special conditions which the council consider necessary to preserve the allotment garden from deterioration and of which notice to applicants for the allotment garden is given in accordance with the Allotment Rules made by the council.
- The Tenant shall use the allotment garden for the cultivation of vegetables or fruit crops for consumption mainly or wholly by the Tenant or the Tenant’s family.
- Any member or officer of the council shall be entitled at any time, when directed by the council, to enter and inspect an allotment garden.
- The tenant shall, in writing and addressed to the Chief Officer of Leisure and Direct Services, inform the council of any change of address.
Determination of tenancy
The tenancy shall terminate on the 25th day of March or the 29th day of September next after the death of the tenant, and shall also terminate whenever the tenancy or right of occupation of the council terminates. It may also be terminated by the council by re-entry after one month's notice :
- If the rent is in arrears for not less than 40 days; or
- If the tenant is not duly observing the rules affecting the allotment garden, or any other term or condition of his tenancy, or if the tenant becomes bankrupt or compounds with his creditors.
The tenancy may also be determined by the council or tenant by not less than six months notice in writing to quit expiring on or before the 6th day of April or on or after the 29th day of September in any year.
The tenant may determine this tenancy within one month of receiving a notice of increase of rent by giving to the council on. month's notice in writing.
If the allotment garden comprises any land required for any of the purposes mentioned in.paragrephs (b), (c) or (d) or Section 1 (1) of the Allotments Act, 1922, the council shall have power to re-enter upon giving notice in writing in accordance with those provisions and the tenancy shall be determinable accordingly.
