Supporting People
The national 'Supporting People' programme, which went live in April 2003, is intended to fund, develop and review housing-related support services for vulnerable and/or older people. By this is meant support services necessary to ensure that people are able to remain in their own homes and live as independently as possible. Examples of what is covered includes warden services in sheltered housing for older people, support for people with learning difficulties to live independently and maintain a tenancy and so on.
The scheme is operated on a county-wide basis in West Sussex, through a dedicated team based at West Sussex County Council offices in Chichester, but managed by a Commissioning Body including district councils, Primary Care Trusts and the Probation service.
