Key Issues on waste and recycling :
- From 23rd March 2009 the blue box and black sacks will be replaced by blue lidded and grey lidded wheelie bins for recycling and refuse.
- Apart from a few properties in Shoreham and Worthing town centres the blue box will have been replaced by the wheelie bin.
- Some Bring sites remain for residents living in flats
- So far the new wheeled bin service has seen a:
- 24% reduction in residual waste to landfill
- 23% increase in materials for recycling
- 60% increase in garden waste sent for composting
- The current recycling rate for Adur & Worthing is 33.23%
- The introduction
of the new wheeled bin service will :
- Increase the quantity of household waste actually recycled
- Increase the amounts of garden waste sent for composting
- Reduce the quantity of residual waste that cannot be recycled or composted which is sent to landfill
- Existing landfill sites in West Sussex
will be full up within five years
