Bathing water monitoring
Beaches
Adur District Council no longer monitors the quality of the bathing water
along the beaches.
The Environment Agency now undertakes water sampling weekly from May to September, providing 20 samples for each bathing season. These samples are taken from beaches where there are usually the most bathers.
In Adur District such beaches are located at Southwick, in front of Carats Cafe, and at South Lancing, by Lancing Beach Green.
The samples are analysed so the data can be used to classify bathing waters as 'excellent', 'good' or 'poor'. This is a responsibility under the European Union Bathing Waters Directive, aiming to make sure public health is protected and to target areas that need improvement.

Alternatively, recent results can be seen on the notice boards inside Carats Café and on Lancing Beach Green car park.
River Adur
Adur District Council does monitor water quality along the River Adur where water sports regularly occur. For copies of the monthly results or further information or please contact Environmental Support.
Public and private swimming pools
Water
quality testing at pools such as Wadurs and Lancing College is undertaken,
but as these pools are privately owned or run Adur District Council are not
free to issue any results.
Being open to the public these pools have a responsibility to be tested frequently but for results you should contact the pool owners or operators directly.
