Emergencies : Wood loss from vessel - Sinegorsk

Alert warning signAround 8.15am this morning (19th January 2009) Dover Coastguard were alerted to the loss of 1500 metric tonnes of sawn timber which has been lost from the deck of the 1991 built, 137 metre, single screw, single deck , Russian vessel 'Sinegorsk', 14 nautical miles south of Newhaven.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) have been in touch with the council and have issued the following news release  :

Latest situation :

  • The latest on the ship is that the Newhaven Lifeboat has been recalled and Shoreham Lifeboat stood down
  • The captain of the ship is confident that he will reach Isle of Wight without incident
  • MCA are flying over the area to track wood etc
  • Earliest predication is for wood to start coming ashore from 16.00 (High Tide is 17.00)

The council is closely monitoring the situation and is working closely with all partner agencies to ensure that any issues that may arise are dealt with appropriately.

Q - What is the council doing to safeguard our beaches?
A - The council has robust emergency plans in place to deal with marine pollution events and these have been implemented. We are also working closely with the MCA and other partner agencies to coordinate our response in order to ensure that all appropriate measures are taken to minimise the effects of pollution on our beaches.

Q- What should I do if I find any dead birds or other wildlife?
A - Under current control measures that are in place any birds or wildlife found dead should be reported immediately to the RSPCA on their emergency number 0300 1234 999 who will respond appropriately.

Q- What should I do if I find any birds or other wildlife covered with oil?
A - Any birds or wildlife found should be reported immediately to the RSPCA on their emergency number 0300 1234 999 who will respond appropriately.
