Question 5 : Can you tell me why there is nothing being done about the ‘hoodies’ and yobs in my area. Sompting used to be a nice place but now all you get is abuse yelled at you, stones thrown at buses and ‘chavs’ spitting everywhere. Why can’t more be done to stop these hooligans?
Answer : I am very sorry to hear about the trouble you are experiencing in Sompting with Anti Social Behaviour. Unfortunately as Sompting is a large area, and I need to know more specific geographical information before i can really make any comments regarding your particular problem.
However the Council is doing something about Anti-Social Behaviour please read the following information about the safer Adur Team located in Shoreham Police station.
What is the safer adur team doing?
By adopting a multi agency approach, the Safer Adur Team is confident that it can reduce anti-social behaviour in Adur :
- Drug and alcohol education is being delivered to local schools by the Community Drug and Alcohol worker and the police School's Liaison Officer
- Detached youth workers are out and about developing relationships and promoting positive activities with the more isolated youths in Adur
- Police Community Support Officers (PCSO) are out on the streets, listening to local residents and actively challenging anti-social behaviour
- Street Briefings are being held in the streets where ASB is happening
- Acceptable Behaviour Contracts (ABCs) are being drawn up and Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs or ASBO) are being applied for jointly by Sussex Police and Adur District Council
What can you do?
We believe the key to reducing anti-social behaviour is to work closely with the local community. We need you to :
- If a crime is in progress, call 999
- Call the Anti-Social Behaviour Hotline on (01273) 263356. This is a 24 hour message service. You don't have to leave your details but if you do, we will contact you within two working days
- Talk to your PCSO. You can find out who your local PCSO is by logging onto the Sussex Police website or by calling your local police station
- Keep a log of the incidents including times, dates and descriptions of the perpetrators. We can supply you with an incident diary to help you do this

Question 4 : Why are the toilets in South Street, Lancing, locked? I am in a wheelchair most of the time and I find it ver difficult to use the other ones.
Answer : Toilets for disabled people are often locked up to help prevent them being vandalised. But in doing this it can also stop those in need from gaining access to the facilities. To assist those who require access to these special facilities (across the whole country) the RADAR key scheme was introduced.
RADAR keys are available from the Help Point at the Civic Centre, or the housing offices in Lancing and Southwick. For those that need access to disabled facilities along with a list of facilites in the local area.
If you would like further information about the facilites in the district or the RADAR key scheme please see the Public Conveniences pages on our website
Question 3 : Could you please tell us ... Do pubs and clubs making external alterations either to their existing building or erecting new, to accommodate their smokers, require any planning, environmental, or other permissions?
Answer : With regard to smoke free legislation there are no requirements regarding the provision of outdoor shelters for smokers. However, if smoking shelters are provided they have to conform to regulations. Shelters may have a roof but any walls will have to be less than half the total area of the perimeter (the open area does not include doors, windows or any other fittings that can be open or shut).
I am not an absolute expert in all of the areas surrounding smoke free legislation and there may be a need for planning permission for certain shelters.
If you would like some more information please send development control an e-mail. There may also be other issues regarding noise and litter, please send environmental support an e-mail for help in this area.
To view the full detail on the correct construction of a smoking shelter on our website please visit the FAQ - Smokefree pages.
Question 2 : I am writing to you to complain about the state of Hamble Skate Park in Sompting, it is a very nice environment but the park could do with some shelter and some litter bins as the park gets very messy. The ground of the park is very bumpy so many young people fall off their Skateboards and injure themselves.
Answer : Thank you for your comments all of which have been passed on to Parks Services. With reference to the lack of bins there are five bins located around the Hamble Park and there is a daily cleanup crew there to pick up litter and sort out any vandalism that they might find. The bumpy ground at the Hamble Park is caused by natural undulation and not something we can do anything about, I am sure that you understand that a Skate park has been provided specifically so that skaters will not injure themselves on the undulating ground. There has been some consideration concerning the installation of shelters at the Hamble but obviously there are a lot of factors to think about when taking such steps and no concrete discussions have taken place to date.
If you would like to find out more about the Hamble Skate Park and the other skate and BMX facilities in Adur you can view their details in the leisure section on our website.
Question 1 : Can you please tell me why we do not have recycling in Church Lane, Sompting (BN15 0BA)? We have dustmen, milkman, paperboy but no recycling. It cannot be because of parking as every house in the lance has its own private layby. Your lorries also drive passed my house to go to the pub at the end of the road to do the recycling there.
Answer : Firstly let me thank you for your question, I hope I my answer is satisfactory to you. After investigation into the above matter I can tell you there is no recycling in Church Lane for the following reason :
- Unlike regular rubbish pick ups, recycling currently has to be sorted by the roadside. The narrow nature of Church Lane and the extended time taken to retrieve recycling means that there would be an unacceptable blockage to the road.
All is not lost for recycling in Church lane however. There currently bring sites situated at the Marquis de Granby, Ball Tree Inn PH car park and Millfield Garage Compound. If you would like more information you can view the recycling pages on our website (also recycling centres). Or contact household recycling services on (01273) 263133 or send recycling an e-mail.
