Opening external website links in new browser windows or tabs

On many pages on our website we provide links to other relevant or useful websites. These external websites will open in the same browser window as the Adur DC website. This means you will 'navigate away' from our site when you follow an external website link. You will then have to use your web browser's back button to return to our website. (See also our external links statement).

However, if you want to keep our website open but also open another website in a new browser window or tab (so you can easily come back to our website or swap between the sites) then you will have do do the following :

Windows logoWindows :

  • Move your mouse cursor over the external website link you wish to open
  • Right mouse click on the website link
  • Select either 'Open in new tab' or 'Open in new window'
  • (depending on which browser you are using if you hold down the 'shift key' and then click on a link this will either open a new tab or window)
  • You will then have multiple windows (or tabs) open allowing you to use the external website(s), switch between the open websites and then close the external websites when you have finished with them to return to the Adur DC website

Apple Mac logoApple Macs :

  • Move your mouse cursor over the external website link you wish to open
  • To open a new tab : Do an 'Apple T' or 'Command T' as you click on the website link
  • To open a new window : Do an 'Apple N' or 'Command N' as you click on the website link
  • You will then have multiple windows (or tabs) open allowing you to use the external website(s), switch between the open websites and then close the external websites when you have finished with them to return to the Adur DC website

Website URLs for external links :

Example of pop-up alt-text on an external website linkOn the Adur District Council website external web links will normally only show the website name on screen, when you put your mouse over them most web browsers will give pop-up alt-text saying "External link" (see right).

When you print an Adur District Council webpage if only the website name is shown on screen then the website URL will be included on your print out, for example if 'BBC website' is shown on screen it will print as :

  • BBC website (www.bbc.co.uk)
